Once again, in No. 3, Box starts us off with a bang, a horrific scene of slaughter, whose ramifications we can hardly imagine. Nothing makes sense. But Box will take us, in clear, evocative and sensitive prose, on the journey of revelation and--maybe--payback. That is one of the things that make his stories so satisfying. Nature is an even more powerful factor here than in other Box stories, with heavy storm warnings and incredible depths of snow. "Storm Warning" is an even better title, for the effects it has on Pickett's relationships. In this story, Box orchestrates the arrival of diverse parties of interest in a murder, and a threat to Game Warden Joe Pickett's not-yet-adopted daughter (from earlier stories). I find at least six plot lines at work, masterfully interwoven. The forms of desperation and dementia on display are admirably developed, sneaking into your consciousness as they ooze from people trapped in a whiteout--panic, obsession, paranoia, bureaucracy, cowardice. The big family issue is not the usual threats to Joe's family, but the issues of adoptive vs. natural parental rights. Box is certainly developing Joe's character from one story to the next: we see him in a new and ugly light (or darkness). Box is really good at working in "big issues," lucidly explaining them on a local level, and considering them reasonably. Of course, not everyone else does, and that's part of the suspense, along with animal slaughter, murder, militants, and victims of government crimes. Box sure can imagine some nasty "lawmen." The outside Federal help here is glib, manipulative, and profoundly frustrating. The sort where if you are not "with the program," you will be shot! Finally, I appreciate Box putting the acknowledgements at the end rather than the beginning of the book. Not only do they not chance spoiling bits of the story, but I could only then really appreciate what his people had contributed.
