This massive survey of Scottish literature up to 1903 was long the standard authority on the subject. It was written in an elegant style enhanced at times with flashes of quiet sarcasm and understatement. It would appear that the author actually read everything he discussed. He had a bias against fantasy (Oliphant and MacDonald). He blundered into saying that Stevenson's masterpiece was Prince Otto. He seems indeed to have had a dislike of Stevenson, possibly related to a general dislike of literary success and bestsellers.Product details
